With the lake conditions ideal for offshore fishing, we headed out to the 27 line and trolled north. Darker and some old moldy salmon are still around. We are hearing of a few more browns now in the Oak, especially thru yesterday. Spoons chipped in but flasher/fly and meat rigs were good. Still hanging on to warm (hot) weather but theres a change afoot in the forecast with chance of significant rain mid week and a cool down. The NYS Canal Corporation releases water from the Erie Canal into Lake Ontario Tributaries in Western New York on an extended and pulsed schedule each fall to enhance trout and salmon fishing opportunities. On the dates not included above both before and after anglers can still fish any of the water adjacent to the Archers Club but access will have to be by walking and wading from downstream at the Park Ave Ext Fishing Trail or from upstream at the Waterport dam. New Yorks lakes and streams offer great opportunities for fishing in a wide array of settings across the state. Fishing on the bays has been excellent. Josh Dunkelburger of Olcott reports some walleye and carp were being caught off the NYPA fishing platform this week. Those chances should only improve with cooler weather. More of the up and down temps that weve been experiencing so far this winter. Theres lots of good fishing for salmon, steelhead and brown trout ahead! Theres still good numbers of fish higher in the Oak watercourse nearer the dam.
Salmon Fishing at Waterport Dam Daily Update Oak Orchard River Slight warm up for the weekend with chance of rain end of weekend and then cold for start of next week. With no real winter to come out of and trib and open lake water temps all on the warmer side, who knows for sure how the steelhead gods will play things out over the next couple months?! Other area smaller waterways will be snowed and frozen in. More rain thru yesterday (Mon) and today (Tues) with continued cooler weather. At least whatever trib and near shore Lake Ontario trout action that is underway is not likely to experience a temp spike anytime soon. With the final weekend of the Lake Ontario Counties Fall Derby approaching, it is important to be in the contest if you are on the water. Water color has improved to about 1 plus feet of viz. Use caution because the current on the narrow waterway can be dangerous. And, a big shout-out and congratulations to Crazy Yankee for winning this past weekends 2021 Niagara Pro Am! Even clear water finds the caster at an advantage over the troller. For now in the near term low and clear flows are not in the cards. You wouldnt mind see flows a little higher in the Oak for best steelhead chances, but the risk there is to be careful what you wish for. Through the past weekend and beginning part of this week, guys reported a few hook-ups by either working the holes, the dam, or swinging spawning staging spots. Proceeding upstream thru the Oak downstream frog water areas the reports are quieter but I suspect guys are into a decent skein bite. Fished pretty much 100- 250 feet of water. Flows in the Oak are high with about 2 ft of visibility. First, take advantage of mature king, coho salmon and brown trouts urge to seek the river waters around the piers at the Point Breeze pier, channel, and bay casting with brightly colored spoons is the ticket, especially predawn and at sunset. Ground flow recharge from strong supplies might keep things up a little higher then typical winter levels but never-the-less things will be icing in or freezing up except for a few fast water slots. High winds and advisory is likely for something like Fri/Sat/Sun. Flows in the other smaller waterways are about medium and slightly stained, likely offering up a nice fishable window for now. The Line/Lure used was Copper line, Pro Troll and Meat. If an angler arrives at a parking lot and there are several cars, they should consider going to another parking lot. Oak Orchard Tackle and Narbys is stocked for Fall salmon lures and gear. Many still in good green shape with some old moldies now on Halloween zombie patrol downstream. One guy catches a fish, another guy quick runs the fish over to the turbine channel cradled in a net. The rain is Lake Effect so as is often the case with snow most of it goes south of the area. The best spinner/fly set up is DW Gator Flasher Spindoctor with an A-TOM-IK BAM fly. The longer range forecast looks like back to colder for rest of next week. Thru this weekend flows are prob more agreeable for better drifts but the water color is worse so there could be tougher action. Remember as these kings start to stage that their preferred water temps are also changing. They also caught their biggest king at 27-1/2 pounds. Must be the the cool Bauer and GLoomis spey gear that made it happen for Chuck the Swinger end of Apr 2021! Then theres the building King numbers at the dam, fish numbers probably outpacing the creeling pressure to this point. Look for a good water flow window possibly in the Genesee while the Niagara remains a tough pill thanks to a windy open Lake Erie.

Upstate and Western New York Fishing Report - October 21, 2021 Action and effort and work is going on to secure a better fishing future! Lots of water for fish to spread out and be anywhere they want to be, including the overflow pools. We recommend wearing cleats and to always be careful crossing. If youre reading this you should be at the right spot on our new fishing conditions page. Not a lot of steelhead mentioned yet, but still plenty of time with colder weather ahead to bring on some chrome migrations. We hooked a lot of fish both days.
Oak Orchard River Fishing for Salmon Waterport Dam October 5, 2021 I have stayed busy trolling 60-105 ft near bottom with cut bait fly rigs especially on magnum wire divers. So, we moved out to 250-300 FOW and things got better. Its a semi serious band forecast to set up off Lake Erie. Anglers fishing from boats should be able to maintain at least six feet of distance between one another. A few more guys out on the Oak today than the past weekend, but still not all that much fishing pressure. The new lodge is convenient to eastern tribs like Sandy Creek. Browns are more likely in downstream water with a few steelhead at the dam. No serious cold snap is seen in the near term forecast. Looking forward to more angler reports and success but over all the fishing pressure has been real light. Mid Apr 2022. Other area smaller tribs are at med and slightly stained. Stay at the shop lodge (Licorice Lodge) close to the Oak Orchard River fishing action! Since 1/4 inch of rain did not do much it looks like 1/2 inch or more of rain in a storm or otherwise would be needed to effect any positive change in flows. Thats on the ground now and will make for the next spate of water when that melts. Fishing has been a challenge. Capt. Drifts now will definitely be more productive then a few days ago. More then not, fish are still in good green shape. Fishing pressure is down all around, especially in the Oak. Some persistent casting in the low light or at night periods should provide chances for hard strikes and good fights. A dropping and clearing water scenario is a contrast for what youd rather see as rising or high flows for best chances at fresh fish migrations. So it sounds a little like an improvement from a struggle for a hook up to getting a few. Fished the 26-27 line, a little west but not far. Looks like a good head of turbine water with overflow levels diminished. Real low, low, mod, mod to med, med, slightly high, slightly high to high, high, real high, blown. Inside water has been sporadic. "On the Water" Media Group and host, Chris Megan with his film crew from East Falmouth, MA were at the Oak today catching an early brown trout following the morning rainfall. Cool nights and cooperative winds should make for better battles with more staging Kings and trout chances as well. Flows for now are slightly high or maybe one click less consisting of all turbine water at 2+ feet of visibility. 106. Many thanks to the Archers Club for opening up the Fall fishing access. The last few weeks out of Bald Eagle Marina we have been fishing offshore as there has been some good steelhead action with a few teenage kings in the mix. Thin reports from anglers, so far, the beginning part of the week but thru the past weekend guys were still into a few fish. We started the morning in the same water we had been fishing. Other area smaller tribs are dropping back toward low and clear and warming thru this week. Even without any significant new precipitation, look for flows in the Oak to stay up thanks to strong swamp headwater supplies. Up in the gorge, Mike Rzucidlo of Niagara Falls was at Artpark on Tuesday and caught two small walleyes and eight small bass on jigs. Expect daily water level fluctuations thanks to leaf fall/wind and hydro power operations. Registration is only open for KOTO at Ernsts Lake Breeze Marina. Agreeable temps are expected today (Tuesday) and tomorrow (Wednesday) with a forecasted snow storm expected Thursday. At the Waterport Dam, its reported there are just a few fish and likely none holding in downstream fast water runs or holes. Good drifting and swinging chances there too with warming water temps and the chance for some fresh fish. Tuesdays fishing was EPIC despite it being a bit breezy. He cites that the Salmon showed up earlier in the season due to a number of factors, including a warmer winter, less ice on Lake Erie and an earlier Spring. Monday was much better with a slight breeze on the lake. So well hope that if it stays cold-ish that some more snow will come.

New Yorks lakes and streams offer great opportunities for fishing in a wide array of settings across the state. Flows are something like med to slightly high with 1 2 ft of visibility. Temps for the weekend are forecast to rebound back into the 40s F. Water flows are def enough to encourage some fresh fish migrations at any time and the water color now is in a sweet spot for good presentations. Same for estuary slow water areas on the smaller tribs where guys have had on and off action. One note: the spiny water flea bloom is in progress so rig your rods with 30-50# mono on riggers and be prepared to check rods often.

Flows in the smaller area waterways should continue to drop from around moderate maybe going toward low and clear. Early silver fish like this are a good sign for the upcoming trib action. #2 of 53 B&Bs / Inns in Dsseldorf. Fish for bass with Senko rigs. With the heavy rains we received the past week and more on the way it doesnt look like it will be coming down anytime soon. We ended the day with a few silver fish and a bunch of lake trout. Downstream spots on the Oak for the past weekend may have been tougher on what was dropping and clearing flows, altho we did not hear from many guys. After unseasonably warm temps thru yesterday and wind, the forecast thru this end part of the week is cooler with rain or showers tonight going over to snow showers tomorrow. They fished a little west of port between the 27-29 lines of latitude. Put a 10+ lb. Warm weather is forecast under windy conditions over the next couple days and cooling down for the weekend. Slightly lower flows will likely reveal more browns then thought when the water was higher. Real light fishing pressure today, only one car observed in the parking spots on the Oak. Small and Largemouth Bass are also abundant, aggressive and eager to bend your rod. Anglers out over the past weekend reported a few hook ups on some steelhead by working different spots in the river. A little bit hard to stay on top of trib water flows as it seems like Canal drainage water is being passed thru with select adjustments on the water managers end that only they know about. Good drifting and swinging chances there too with warming water temps and the chance for some fresh fish. Lakeshore conditions should likewise be wide open if any hardware chuckers were so inclined to make some casts. 585-682-4546 Any new precipitation could likewise bring those flows back up and dirty. Divers fired from 90-115 out on 2.5 settings. Sorry it took so long! Spring spoon casting action for brown trout at the pier heads and lakeshore when wind and waves come together to bring that semi stained water within casting range. No doubt as flows drop and clear even a little guys should get onto more fish, especially brown trout. Slower action there reported just lately after some good quality fish were hooked in the previous higher and dirtier water color. Its a difficult forecast to predict what may happen to trib conditions but any over-the-all colder temps that will come along with the icing or snow should continue the dropping and clearing trend in the waterways to mod in the Oak and low in the smaller waterways. Shouldnt be any serious icing in yet but there could be some bank ice or chunky flows. Internet bragging seems a lot less prevelant then it was a few years ago, and our reports tend to be even keeled not reporting fish numbers great enough that they would be jumping in your waders even if they were! Good looking nice active fish all around. As we started getting into 90-100 we noticed a ton of bait and big fish on the bottom. The weather continues with near record warmth! Downstream slow water spots are for sure locked up and even upstream all the way to the dam is frozen except for a rivulet here and there or if you were to break something open. Chance of icing in select areas. Flows in the Oak are restored thru the turbine channel. And that flat downstream water on the Oak is just tougher to fish period except for good float techniques or cast/retrieve. The Fall LOC Derby is in its final stretch this week, ending Sept. 5th. Theres been on and off good action like at the Archers Club and some Kings continue to drop back from the dam. Herring Twinkie Fly rigs fooled some big uns! More then likely flows will be on the rise in the near future and hydro managers could bump flows up beforehand in anticipation of higher run of the river flows to come. (Highly recommended!) Fish for bass on Sodus Bay throwing-out worm rigs between the islands at the north end of the bay. No doubt there are some guys out quietly getting into some browns and steelhead in the smaller tribs. Flows in the Oak are moderate and mostly clear. Flows in the Oak still humming along at around slightly high and slightly stained. On Saturday there were bass boats fishing on the south side next to the Port Gibson bridge. Fishing pressure fairly heavy thru the past weekend and even thru yesterday but for this mid week period now with wetter weather looks quite a bit less., Tom and his crew from Pennsylvania joined us Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Look for flows to hang in or drop back another notch toward medium in the near term. Im so sorry, sorry you needed a helmet to fish with me 20.
